Organisation of EPC

Aims of the EPC

The Engineering Professors' Council (EPC) exists to promote excellence in engineering in higher education. It provides a unique forum for senior academics responsible for engineering teaching and research in higher education.

It is led by a committee, representative of all types of university and all engineering disciplines, and supported by a Secretariat and Research Office.

Membership

Membership is open to Engineering Professors and non-professorial Heads of Engineering Departments in all UK universities.

All branches of engineering are represented within the membership - not only the mainstream engineering disciplines such as Aeronautical, Civil, Chemical, Electrical, Electronic, Manufacturing and Mechanical Engineering and the less numerous Minerals, Metallurgy and Marine Engineering, but also the broad areas of General engineering studies and those in which engineering is combined with a range of other topics. In some universities, frequently those where computing forms part of an Engineering School or Faculty, professors of Computer Science are also members.

There are currently over 1700 members in over 80 universities and university institutions.

Communication with the membership, and through them the wider body of engineering academics, is maintained by a network of EPC Representatives, one in each university.

Activities

The EPC holds two main meetings each year. The Annual Congress, held in one of the member universities, usually in the Easter vacation, is open to all members and a number of invited guests. At the Congress speakers from a range of organisations in education, industry and government address the professoriate on matters of current interest. The Autumn meeting, which is restricted to EPC Representatives from the universities, focuses on the EPC's own activities and initiatives and advises the Committee on the Council's future direction.
