Update on E4E Activities – April 2009

Education for Engineering – E4E

The new ‘Education for Engineering’ alliance was formed by merging the Engineering Education Alliance (EEA) and the Shape the Future Steering Group (StF). The core structure of E4E is based on a Policy Group and an Operational Group. Dick Olver FREng has been appointed as Chair of the Policy Group and he will be meeting with the Chairs of ACME and SCORE shortly. He will also be meeting with the ETB Professional Panel (the successor to the G15 of Engineering Institutions) which remains an enthusiastic supporter of the new body.

Doug Oughton Chairs the Operational Group which has met twice already, both meetings being very well attended with constructive discussion. Initial work is focused on finalising the vision, and mission statements. However, it has already been agreed that the need for a Single Engineering Message embracing the whole engineering community remains a high priority and a Working Group has been established to continue the previous EEA work in this area.

The role of Head of Secretariat is currently being carried out part-time by Matthew Harrison of The Royal Academy of Engineering. Once funding allows, a full-time officer will be appointed. The funding option currently being explored is for the Engineering Institutions, engineering employers and Government to each provide one third of the operating costs.

Longitudinal Study

This proposal originated within the EEA and aims to identify the key factors that shape the patterns of participation, engagement and success in engineering. The latest version was submitted to the ESRC in February. The outcome is awaited.
