Assessment of Learning Outcomes Working Group Report – December 2007

Accreditation

Partly as a result of the success of the workshops run over the summer, FJM has been invited to address the next meeting of the Engineering Accreditation Board (EAB) on 11th December to talk about developments in the assessment of learning outcomes and their relevance to professional bodies.

Working Group Website

The acronym ALOE (standing for Assessment of Learning Outcomes in Engineering) has been used in establishing the group website: www.aloe.ac.uk . This is now up and running and contains the materials produced by the group together with links to other relevant documents. It also contains links to the websites of the three supporting bodies (EPC, ECuk and the HEA Engineering Subject Centre).

Future Plans

The focus for the group is now:

  1. To plan and mount the International Conference on ALOE in November or December 2008 in London
  2. To monitor and publish the commissioned case study work already in hand
  3. To react to further requests for workshops particularly from Professional Bodies

The need for the continuation of the Working Group will be reviewed following the conference in 2008.

EASIMAP Project

The working group forms the Steering Group for the JISC funded project which is developing an electronic tool to link assessment with students’ professional development records and e-portfolios. It will offer an opportunity to take a more holistic view of the design of programme-wide assessment. The project has now entered the pilot testing stage and three universities are already signed up, with several more discussing involvement. The four HE institutions involved in the ECuk’s ‘Engineering Gateways’ Project are also being approached regarding involvement as the EASIMAP tools should be ideal for use in the proposed courses. The project is scheduled to finish in August 2008.
