Engineering Professors’ Council
Mathematics Working Group Report – February 2008
Engineering Diploma Level Three
The Diploma Task Group is holding discussions with four Awarding Bodies regarding accrediting the Engineering Mathematics module being proposed as a Specialist Learning option for those students aiming to progress into engineering degree programmes. Significantly, the QCA have joined the Task Group (at their request) to help expedite this process, thus ensuring that the deadlines are met to enable the module to be offered with the first cohort of students in September 2008.
Workshops continue to be run, with the event on 6th February at Solihull focusing on FE Colleges, and on 7th February at Bristol focusing on Universities. The next event will focus on engaging with industry. These workshops are being well received by a broad range of staff.
Dr. Sapna Somani has been appointed as the full-time Mathematics Coordinator to develop the industrial exemplars which are seen as critical to the success of the module. Sapna is funded by the DCSF and based at the Royal Academy of Engineering.
Other Diplomas (e.g. Construction) are considering using the Engineering Mathematics module, and those involved with mounting the Science Diploma (to commence in 2009) are already suggesting that a similar approach to that used by engineering needs to be employed.
