2002 Representatives' Meeting
Delegate comments:
"The Best November meeting I have been to in nine years!"
"An excellent day"
"The Bologna Seminar was well worthwhile and justified the hours each way on the train"
Just a few quotes from EPC members who attended our meeting and/or seminar on the Bologna Agreement. Members seemed to agree that it was an outstanding meeting with excellent speakers and enough time for discussion and networking with colleagues.
The seminar on the Bologna Agreement enabled members to consider the possible far-reaching implications of this to consider the impact it could have on engineering degrees in the future. Graham Hills was thought provoking and discussed Mode 1 and Mode 2 learning. Professor Hedberg from Lulea University added a European dimension and Richard Shearman from the Engineering Council outlined the possible implications.
On the Thursday the Representatives meeting started with the Chairman's review of the past year and a short discussion on the draft revised EPC Strategy. This was followed by Andrew Ramsay from the Engineering Council who talked about the revision of SARTOR which is taking place and the likely implications for EPC Members. After coffee John Garside, the Principal of UMIST and a former EPC Committee member spoke on behalf of Universities UK on the future of University education and in particular changes which will result from widening access. He also touched on the review of the RAE exercise.
In the afternoon we started with a look at the political dimension to higher education with Dr Ian Gibson the Chairman of the House of Commons Select Committee on Science and Technology. We then moved on to a consideration of salaries and conditions of service with Dr Gillian Howie a representative of the AUT who stood in for Sally Hunt who was unable to attend.
